Clásico de Avellaneda: Racing Club vs Independiente
Two stadiums 300 metres apart: football's closest and fiercest neighbourhood derby
Neighbours and Arch-Rivals in Avellaneda
Nowhere in world football do two fierce rivals live quite as close together as Racing Club and Independiente in Avellaneda, the industrial city just south of Buenos Aires. Racing was founded in 1903, Independiente two years later in 1905, and both clubs built their stadiums within a few hundred metres of each other — a proximity so unusual that Avellaneda stands as one of the only cities in the world to be home to two different Intercontinental Cup-winning clubs. The rivalry's roots go back further than most: the clubs' reserve sides met as early as June 1907, with Independiente winning 3-2, years before either club's first team had established itself as a national power. Both would go on to define eras of South American football in very different ways. Independiente became the continent's most decorated club in the Copa Libertadores, lifting the trophy seven times between 1964 and 1984 — a record no other club has matched — earning the nickname 'Rey de Copas,' the King of Cups. Racing, known to its fans as 'La Academia,' answered with the 1967 Copa Libertadores and, months later, a stunning Intercontinental Cup win over Celtic, becoming the first Argentine club ever to be crowned world champions. That early glory has not made the rivalry any gentler in the decades since. The two clubs have repeatedly settled title races and survival battles in direct confrontation, from Independiente's 1983 championship clinched in the same match that sent Racing down to the second division, to the chaotic 'Clásico de los 9' of February 2020, when both sides finished with just nine men on the pitch after four red cards, and still found a way to produce a last-gasp winner. With two of Argentina's most historic clubs sharing a single small corner of Avellaneda, every meeting carries the weight of a rivalry that has never needed distance to stay intense — only the width of a few city blocks.
Derby History: Legendary Encounters
The most iconic, unforgettable matches that defined this historic rivalry
The legendary 'Clásico de los 9'. Racing were reduced to 9 men after red cards to Arias (39') and Sigali, but Independiente also finished with 9 following dismissals for Domínguez and Romero — the match was decided between two sides down to nine men, not a heroic Racing against a full-strength rival. In the 86th minute, Marcelo Díaz netted an improbable winner, the goal born from a Cvitanich run down the right and a ball Miranda let run through.
A historic 4-0 derby rout starring 17-year-old Sergio 'Kun' Agüero. Alongside Nicolás Frutos' hat-trick (35' pen, 56' header, 75' pen), Agüero delivered an unforgettable 82nd-minute solo goal, carrying from midfield and repeatedly wrong-footing Crosa before finishing left-footed.
One of the most intense afternoons in Argentine football. With Racing having suffered mathematical relegation in the prior round, Independiente won 2-0 with goals from Giusti (43') and Trossero (48'), securing the league championship on the final day against their cross-town rival.
