Derby della Madonnina
AC Milan vs Inter Milan
The History of the Rivalry
AC Milan and Inter Milan share more than a city — they share a stadium. Since 1926, both clubs have played their home matches at San Siro (officially the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza), an arrangement almost unheard of among Europe's giants and one that makes the Derby della Madonnina, named for the golden statue of the Madonna atop Milan's cathedral, feel like a civil war fought on shared ground. Milan Cricket and Football Club was founded in 1899 by the English textile trader Alfred Edwards and railway engineer Herbert Kilpin. Inter's origin, less than a decade later, was an act of rebellion: on 9 March 1908, a group of roughly 44 members split from Milan in protest at the club's policy of fielding Italian-only sides, forming Foot-Ball Club Internazionale on the principle — reflected in the very name — that foreign players deserved a place in the team. Giorgio Muggiani, who designed Inter's blue-and-black crest, and a cluster of Swiss and Italian members including the Hintermann and Rietmann families were among the founders. The rivalry has produced two of the tensest chapters in Champions League history, both between the same two clubs. In the 2003 semi-final — still the only all-Milanese tie in the competition's history — Milan and Inter played out two goalless-turned-narrow draws, 0-0 and 1-1, with Milan advancing on away goals before going on to lift the trophy. Two years later, in the 2005 quarter-final, Milan led the second leg 1-0, holding a 2-0 aggregate cushion, when Inter supporters bombarded goalkeeper Dida with flares and bottles from the stands. The match was abandoned, and UEFA awarded Milan a 3-0 forfeit victory, completing a 5-0 aggregate win that remains one of the most notorious nights in the derby's history. Rossoneri and Nerazzurri have combined for more European Cups than any other city pairing in football, and the balance of power between them has swung across generations — from Milan's dominance under Sacchi and Capello to Mourinho's treble-winning Inter of 2010 and the title races of the 2020s. Whatever the era, the derby's real stakes have never simply been about the league table: it is a fight over which club gets to define Milan itself.
